Identifying local problems

  1. Swimming not advised at one South Florida beach after samples show high poop levels
    1. https://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/community/miami-dade/article239621663.html
    2. Florida health department finds high traces of poop in the dog beach on Rickenbacker Causeway and issued a swimming advisory for the beach.
    3. Swimming in waters polluted with that much bacteria is detrimental to both human and canine health.
    4. Dogs and people have the problem.
  2. Campus blue lights not used for emergency situations often, data shows
    1. https://www.alligator.org/news/campus-blue-lights-not-used-for-emergency-situations-often-data/article_18d5adfa-4407-11ea-8944-73d007b022df.html
    2. Reports by multiple universities show that campus blue lights are not being utilized much in emergencies, and some students have expressed that they have become obsolete, yet campus police officers disagree. They mention that they are still doing their function by acting as deterrence.
    3. The problem is that campus blue lights are not being used for all emergencies as some people might find using their cell phones are more effective and efficient. This could lead to the removal of the blue lights but officials feel that that would invite more danger.
    4. Students and staff on campus have a problem since they are the ones who can utilize the towers if needed.
  3. UF implements two-factor authentication to combat cybercrime
    1. https://www.alligator.org/news/uf-implements-two-factor-authentication-to-combat-cybercrime/article_70230c50-4246-11ea-bf84-03d618ab4326.html
    2. The University of Florida will implement an added security procedure to combat cybercrime, which is a present issue in many colleges through a method called 'phishing'. Cybercriminals can obtain student credentials or student data if they fall for the false emails. The system will be added at the end of the spring semester.
    3. Cybercriminals are stealing both student and school information by sending scam emails pretending to be the student help desk.
    4. Students and the university have a problem since they risk exposing their private information.
  4. Super Bowl-inspired snake hunters capture 80 pythons in Everglades competition
    1. https://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/environment/article239656523.html
    2. Snake hunters participated in an annual competition to capture pythons in the Florida everglades in the days leading up to the Superbowl.
    3. The problem is that pythons are an invasive species that have dominated the everglades and thus upset the local food chain. They reproduce rapidly and have no natural enemy to keep their numbers down.
    4. Everglades animals, visitors, and park officials all share the python problem.
  5. In Miami, your Super Bowl beer is going to be different. It won’t come in a plastic cup
    1. https://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/environment/article239494128.html
    2. The Miami Super Bowl will be ditching plastic in their venue with recyclable material instead in hopes of alleviating some of the plastic waste that ends up in our oceans.
    3. The problem is that most food items and beverages are produced with single-use plastics which will likely end up polluting the environment.
    4. Plastic pollution is a problem for people and animals on a local and global scale.

Forming an Opportunity Belief

Describe your belief:
I believe that there is potential for an opportunity here in the city of Gainesville. My unmet need is the lack of indoor soccer turf fields in Gainesville. The need affects the population of the city that likes the sport and either plays it or has played it. There is plenty of potential for the implementation of an indoor soccer facility as evident by the existing Sunday league community, intramural seasons at UF and Santa Fe College, and youth clubs in Gainesville. The need for a location has always existed, to my knowledge, even before I moved up here since there are none here. This would allow customers to play at whatever time they please, no matter the conditions outside as they would be sheltered. There has been no development in fulfilling this need. People mostly just play as part of an intramural team or Sunday league team. I am 85% sure that this opportunity exists.

Prototypical customer:
The prototypical customers would be soccer players.

Iteration # 1
An intramural teammate, male, 19
What is the exact nature of the need?
"There needs to be an alternative to league games, which are just one day out of the week. It should be something less formal and can be planned with whoever you want it to be."
When do you become aware of the need? Is it all the time or sometimes?
"I become aware of the need when I feel like playing, it is not all the time but it will pop up pretty frequently."
How long have you had the need?
"Since my first semester at UF, fall 2018 ."
When did you first become aware of this need? Why?
"My first semester at UF, because back home I would have indoor games like 4 times a month, and I was unable to do that activity here."
How are you currently addressing your need?
"I just play here at Southwest Rec once a week with my intramural team for the season, which lasts about a month right now."
How satisfied are you with your solution?
"I'm somewhat satisfied. Indoor would be great because I would be able to plan out games when I felt like playing."

Iteration #2
A friend's girlfriend, plays soccer, 18
What is the exact nature of the need?
"It is a place to improve your ability as a player since there is more focus on individual skills. It feels more private."
When do you become aware of the need? Is it all the time or sometimes?
"I become aware when I get inspired to play after watching a game or seeing the best highlights of the week. I become aware of it sometimes."
How long have you had the need?
"I've had the need ever since I moved up here to Gainesville, last fall."
When did you first become aware of this need? Why?
"I first became aware of this need when I googled indoor soccer and the closest results were in Orlando."
How are you currently addressing your need?
"I play intramural at UF and I also go take practice shots at a park close to my apartment."
How satisfied are you with your solution?
"I'm not that satisfied, I get left with the feeling of wanting more. Indoor soccer is my favorite form of soccer so that's when I have the most fun."

Iteration #3
A Sunday league player, male, 27
What is the exact nature of the need?
"It is another option to play when the conditions aren't so great outside. There has been plenty of times where games are canceled and have to be rescheduled and me and my teammates are left with the desire of wanting to play."
When do you become aware of the need? Is it all the time or sometimes?
"Since I mostly play Sunday league it's only sometimes when the day is ugly outside and we can't play. It also happens when the league is in a break and I want to play."
How long have you had the need?
"Probably since I first started Sunday league like two years ago."
When did you first become aware of this need? Why?
"I first became aware during the summer of my first year doing Sunday league, since it rains a lot during the summer."
How are you currently addressing your need?
"I try to play pick-up games at my apartment complex when I don't have games."
How satisfied are you with your solution?
"I'm pretty satisfied, both the league and the pick-up games keep me busy."

Reflection
I feel like there is strong approval of my opportunity within the local soccer community. The most surprising thing I learned was the different ways people make up for the lack of an indoor soccer place.  Depending on the amount of free time, the stronger the approval for the opportunity.

Summary:

How much of your original opportunity is still there?
After asking the prototypical customers about the opportunity I'd say that there about 67% of my opportunity exists. Gainesville has a large soccer community so I still believe it'd be a success to start it.
Do you believe that your new opportunity is more accurate than when you started?
I believe it is less accurate than when I started. 2 out of the 3 prototypical customers expressed substantial concern at the lack of the opportunity while the odd one out had more of a feeling of indifference.
How much do you think entrepreneurs should 'adapt' their opportunities based on customer feedback?
I believe entrepreneurs should start their opportunities the way they envisioned it, then after initial feedback, make modifications to it in order to satisfy their customers. The trade-off would be that the entrepreneur loses more and more of his original concept but adapts to ensure that customers are pleased and come back to them.

Entreprenurship Story

I do not remember exactly what was my first encounter with entrepreneurship, but I do recall some movies which definitely sparked my interest in the subject. Some of these movies are: The Pursuit of Happyness, The Wolf of Wall Street, The Founder, and Lord of War. While I realize that the majority of the people featured in these films are not exactly role models for ethics, I am still amazed by the drive, vision, and creativity they possessed to build their own businesses.

I enrolled in ENT3003 because the idea of being my own boss, creating something that I would own fascinate me. Whether it takes up part of my time on the side or it is my full time responsibility, I have yet to decide. But I do know that I am curious and eager to learn more. From this course I want to learn how to take advantage of business opportunities when they present themselves in order to someday implement my teachings in a real business-like scenario so that I may prosper.

Bug List

  1. It bugs me when my roommate doesn't refill the Brita filter after he drinks all the water in it and leaves it on the kitchen table.
    1. The issue occurs due to my roommate's prolific laziness
  2. It bugs me when my roommate will leave a room and leaves the lights, fan, and TV on.
    1. This one results from a lack of discipline in my roommate.
  3.  It bugs me when I'm working at the drive-thru at Dunkin' Donuts and the customers take too long ordering and they ruin my drive-thru time.
    1. This one might occur from customer indecisiveness or perhaps from the small font size on the menu.
  4. It bugs me when you miss your bus because the bus app gives the wrong estimated arrival time.
    1. This one happens because of a bug in the bus app or because the times are uncalibrated.
  5.  It bugs me when I'm trying to watch Disney+ or Netflix and it doesn't work.
    1. This could be due to the servers crashing because of high traffic or a poor connection exists.
  6. It bugs me when I'm trying to get to Santa Fe from my apartment but the wait time for the route that takes me there is over an hour.
    1. This is because where I live, there is only one bus on the route.
  7. It bugs me when I'm trying to go home from Butler plaza and I get caught during rush hour; it takes forever when it usually only takes about five minutes.
    1. This one happens because where I live, there is only one way to get there from Butler plaza and the street is two-laned.
  8. It bugs me when I'm excited about the new Star Wars trilogy and it ends up being disappointed and not meeting its hype.
    1. This occurred because of the change in directors from the first movie to the second and then again from the second to the third.
  9. It bugs me when I'm apartment hunting and I fall in love with a place but the installment rates sit outside of my budget.
    1. This happened to me because, during the tours, the guides would leave the floorplan prices until the end after you've caught feelings for the location.
  10. It also bugs me when all these apartment complexes have a ton of added fees when applying.
    1. I genuinely don't understand the application fees, why do they exist?
  11. It bugs me that I can't eat whatever food I want.
    1. This is because I am lactose intolerant, so dairy products don't tend to agree with me.
  12. It bugs me that the sun goes down at 5:30 in the afternoon, and it always feels later than it really is.
    1. This is a result of the Earth's position from the sun and the tilt of its axis.
  13. It bugs me that the outside temperature will drop to the mid-30s in the morning and at night but it'll be around 70 degrees at noon.
    1. The drastic changes in temperate are a result of the sun rising and setting.
  14. It bugs me that I'll always feel tired when I wake up in the morning, no matter if I slept 5 hours or 8.
    1. This is more a matter of what time I went to sleep and not how long I slept.
  15. It bugs me when I go to a store and their operating hours are different from what it says on google.
    1. This could be updated hours of operation or someone did not copy them down correctly online.
  16. It bugs me that McDonald's ice cream machine is always broken when I'm craving a McFlurry.
    1. It could be the time in which I go to get the ice cream, it could be after they have cleaned the machine.
  17. It bugs me when Amazon delivers my package but I am not aware because the clubhouse staff has not informed me.
    1. I think it's from a glitch in the community's system that I don't receive their notifications.
  18. It bugs me when I ask for honey mustard sauce at a fast-food restaurant and they only hand me one.
    1. I blame company policy for this one, the maximum amount they can hand out is limited to one per customer.
  19. It bugs me when The Weeknd takes forever to drop his new album.
    1. This could be due to the fact that he needs to take his time to perfect each song cause he doesn't produce bad music.
  20. It bugs me when my Roku remote won't turn off my TV so I have to use the TV remote to do it.
    1. I think this is because of the TV's inability to read the remote's signal.
At first, it seemed impossible coming up with bugs to discuss. Sometimes I would second-guess myself and I'd think that they were too bland or not good enough to use in my list and I'd only take longer to come up with new ideas. Once I got into my groove I just kept typing up new bugs or I'd think about another one before I finished the one at hand. I had fun with this exercise. I normally wouldn't sit and think about all the little things that I face in my day-to-day life that tick me off.
